Common Types of Conditions We Treat
Mental health concerns can affect every area of your life, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. We provide personalized, evidence-based therapy designed to help you understand your symptoms, build effective coping strategies, and restore quality of life. Contact us today to begin your journey to healing.
Anxiety
While occasional worry is a normal human response, persistent anxiety that interferes with your daily routine, work, or relationships is a sign that professional support can help. Anxiety disorders can manifest as a chronic, lifelong struggle—marked by uncontrollable worrying, physical tension, and sudden panic attacks—or they can develop rapidly following major life changes, such as grieving a loved one, welcoming a new child, job loss, or surviving an accident. Well-meaning advice from friends to “just relax” often falls short because clinical anxiety involves complex neurochemical imbalances and deep-seated brain patterns that require structured psychological intervention.
Because anxiety presents uniquely in every individual, our licensed psychologists utilize a personalized, integrative approach to anxiety therapy. Drawing from a range of evidence-based therapeutic methods, we tailor your treatment plan to target your specific anxiety triggers and symptoms. These proven psychological techniques empower you to interrupt anxious thought loops, manage panic, and regain a sense of control—often achieving significant, lasting relief without relying solely on medication. Supported by direct academic affiliations, our clinical team stays at the forefront of ongoing anxiety research to ensure you receive the most effective, up-to-date care available.
Chronic Stress
Stress is part of everyone’s daily life. If you are experiencing stress, it simply means that the demands of the current situation are not matching what you are reasonably able to handle at this time. Although stress is normal, chronic stress can result in cognitive impairment such as memory loss, poor concentration and focus and medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
If you are looking for some help with stress management, you have come to the right place. We will work with you to develop an individualized stress management plan and will teach you specific, highly effective techniques to reduce your stress. All of our strategies are based on research from top universities and medical centers. You will feel better and will be much more effective and efficient in your work and daily life activities. We are well known to local CEOs, physicians, attorneys, politicians, and elite athletes on teams such as the Tigers, Lions, and Pistons for effectively teaching stress-management techniques.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
While everyone experiences worry, persistent and uncontrollable intrusive thoughts may be a sign of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). If you find yourself repeatedly performing specific behaviors—such as frequent handwashing, double-checking locks, touching objects in precise patterns, or an overwhelming need for symmetry—to temporarily soothe distressing thoughts, you are not alone. These compulsions offer a temporary sense of safety, but they often turn into a cycle that becomes difficult to break on your own.
Your attempts to stop these behaviors may not be working, or you may not know why you are engaging in these behaviors. Perhaps you try to hide these rituals, but those close to you have started to notice or have become concerned. We specialize in all symptoms of anxiety and, in particular, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. After a brief consultation, we will be able to tell you if the difficulties you are experiencing are something that will pass or if it is something more serious that can cause further difficulties if not treated. Anxiety and OCD are genetically inherited, much like eye or hair color. If anxiety or OCD runs in your family, this is even more reason to address it as early as possible.
Our clinicians at McCaskill Family Services specialize in the most empirically effective treatment for OCD, known as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), including exposure and response prevention techniques. Through our extensive training and experience using this treatment approach, you will learn strategies in a caring, supportive environment to effectively manage your symptoms.
Depression
If you are experiencing symptoms of sadness, crying more than usual, hopelessness, low energy, decreased interest in things you used to enjoy, appetite or sleep changes, irritability or just a general sense of the blues, you may be suffering from depression. Depression can be a lifelong struggle or can be triggered by an event such as the loss of a loved one, job loss, breaking-up with someone, separation or divorce.
You are not alone, and we can definitely help. Depression is more common than you might think, and most people suffer through at least one episode during the course of their lives. Advances in treatment have made it possible for people like you who may suffer from depression to live happier, more content, and well-balanced lives. We specialize in the most empirically established treatment for depression, called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
First, you will meet with one of our clinicians to discuss your situation in a confidential, comfortable setting. We teach you techniques proven to work, and (if you do your minimal homework), most treatment can be completed by meeting once a week with your therapist for about 8 to 12 sessions, although it varies by individual. We specialize in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the most well-established, proven method to treat depression.
Trauma & PTSD
If you have experienced a traumatic event that continues to disrupt your peace, daily routine, or sense of safety, you don’t have to carry the weight alone. Trauma can manifest in subtle or overwhelming ways—affecting your sleep, emotional responses, and relationships.
Watch our short video below to learn more about the common signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), how traumatic experiences impact the brain and behavior, and our compassionate, evidence-based approach to trauma recovery.
Grief & Loss
Losing someone you love can be devastatingly painful. Losing your mother, father, sister, brother, daughter, son, spouse, partner, best friend or pet hurts so badly. You want to speak to them or hold them one more time and you can’t. You may have regrets for things you said or didn’t say. Grief can also come in the form of a relationship ending, losing your job, your house, or your physical abilities due to an injury.
You may feel like the pain is too much to handle and you cannot go on. We often describe grief as the most intense physical pain you have ever experienced without the option to go to the emergency room for pain relief medication. You are not alone, and we can help you. The most important step that you can take right now is to schedule an appointment and allow us to get you through this so that the pain becomes more manageable and you can begin to function better. Through empirically proven treatments such as mindfulness, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and interpersonal therapy, you will feel better and get some relief.
Job Dissatisfaction
“What do you do?” It’s often one of the first questions people ask when they meet you. Because adults spend most of their waking hours at work, career satisfaction is deeply tied to personal identity. When your job or career path is no longer fulfilling, it can quickly lead to chronic anxiety, depression, strained relationships, and overwhelming feelings of being trapped or hopeless.
Whether you are struggling in your current job or questioning your overall career path, you don’t have to navigate this alone. The first step is a confidential clinical intake appointment with one of our specialized psychologists. During this initial session, we will gather a comprehensive history of your life and professional background to build a personalized treatment plan tailored to your goals. Even if you feel you have exhausted every option, decades of clinical experience allow us to offer fresh perspectives and evidence-based strategies you may not have considered—helping you move forward with clarity and purpose.
Life Dissatisfaction
Overcoming Life Dissatisfaction & Feeling Stuck
Are you feeling unhappy or dissatisfied with where you are in life? Finding yourself simply going through the motions—facing the same exhausting monotony day after day—can leave you wondering, “Is this really all there is?” When you feel trapped in your current circumstances, it is easy to lose sight of a way forward. Over time, these feelings often lead to anxiety or depression, which can drain the energy and motivation you need to make meaningful changes.
We understand how heavy this weight can be, and you don’t have to carry it alone. The first step toward change is a confidential clinical intake appointment. During this initial session, one of our experienced clinicians will take the time to learn about your past, your current challenges, and your hopes for the future. Together, we will develop a structured, personalized treatment plan designed to help you move forward one step at a time. Supported by decades of clinical experience and helping adults navigate similar crossroads, we offer fresh perspectives and evidence-based strategies to help you break free from routine and regain a sense of purpose.
Bipolar Disorder
Living with Bipolar Disorder is no easy task. The ups and downs of your mood can be challenging to regulate. Medication compliance can be difficult, particularly when you are feeling well. We have experts who specialize in Bipolar Disorder and are here to help you. Treatment yields the best outcomes when medication is combined with individual psychotherapy. We use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, acceptance therapy, and components of interpersonal therapy to help you reach your highest potential.
*We also offer treatment for Child Bipolar Disorder.
Chronic Health Problems / Pain
Living with a chronic health problem is very difficult and can often lead to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, social withdrawal or dysfunction due to chronic pain. Common diseases that can result in more difficulties are asthma, cardiac problems, kidney disease, COPD, Crohn’s Disease, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Hypertension, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, ulcers and more.
Many people with chronic health conditions live happy, well-balanced lives. Individual psychotherapy is a necessary component to give you the support you need from people like us who understand your struggles. Our psychologists have received advanced specialized training in medical psychology at the University of Florida/Shands Hospital, one of the leading medical centers for pain disorders. We use Cognitive-Behavioral and mindfulness techniques as proven, effective strategies to manage pain, depression, and anxiety. We will help you live the life you deserve and improve your current situation.
