Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my teenager needs therapy or if this is just “normal” teen behavior?

It can be difficult to differentiate typical adolescent mood swings from deeper mental health concerns. If you notice persistent shifts in your teen’s behavior—such as declining grades, severe social withdrawal, sudden changes in eating or sleeping habits, intense irritability, self-harm, or suspected substance use—professional guidance is recommended.

During an initial consultation at McCaskill Family Services, our licensed psychologists will evaluate your teen’s symptoms and give you clear, honest insight into whether your child is navigating a passing phase or requires specialized adolescent therapy.

As a teen, I am worried that that therapist will tell my parents everything we talk about. Are the therapy sessions confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is a priority, and therapy is a safe, judgment-free zone where you can be honest without worrying about getting into trouble or having your words repeated. What you share with your therapist stays between you and your therapist. The only time a therapist must step in and involve an adult is if you are in danger of hurting yourself or someone else, or if someone is hurting you.

Will the therapist share what my teen says in their therapy sessions with me?

Therapy is most effective when adolescents feel completely safe and confident that their privacy is protected. While sessions are confidential between your teen and their clinician, parents remain a vital part of the healing process.

Our therapists maintain open communication with parents regarding high-level treatment goals and progress. If your teen discloses anything involving immediate safety risks—such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, or danger to others—parents are notified immediately.

What if my teen refuses to go to therapy?

It is very common for teenagers to feel resistant or defensive about counseling. If your teen refuses to attend, parents are welcome to schedule the initial session independently. Meeting with an adolescent specialist alone gives you an open, confidential space to discuss your concerns, meet the clinician, and evaluate if they are a good match for your child. Our team will provide you with practical, proven strategies to engage your teen and encourage them to take that first step.

What evidence-based treatment methods do you use for teen anxiety and depression?

Our practice specializes in science-backed, empirically tested therapies, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). CBT helps teens reframe negative thought patterns driving anxiety and depression, while DBT equips adolescents with practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and healthy relationships. We also offer multi-disciplinary support, including specialized teen eating disorder programs, equine-assisted therapy, and nutritional counseling.

What if I don’t feel like my therapist “gets” me?

In order for therapy to work, you need to feel comfortable with your therapist. At McCaskill Family Services, our intake team works hard to match your personality, age, and style with a clinician who fits you best. If after a few sessions you feel like it’s not the right match, that is completely okay—we will work with you to find a clinician on our team who feels like a better fit.

Do you accept insurance for teen therapy sessions?

McCaskill Family Services is a private-pay / out-of-network practice. We provide itemized receipts (superbills) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA cards. Visit our Billing & Insurance page to learn more.
