What to Expect: Your 3-Phase Journey to a Healthier Relationship

A clear, structured roadmap designed to bring clarity, healing, and sustainable growth to your partnership.

Phase 1: The Assessment Phase

Sessions 1–4

We lay the foundation by thoroughly understanding your relationship dynamics, goals, and history before diving into treatment.

  • Session 1: Joint intake appointment with both partners.
  • Sessions 2 & 3: Individual sessions with each partner to review questionnaires and personal backgrounds.
  • Session 4: Joint feedback and personalized treatment planning session.

If couples therapy isn’t the right immediate fit, we ensure a seamless referral to specialized individual care or discernment counseling.

Phase 2: The Treatment Phase

Typically ~20 Sessions (Varies by Need)

All sessions moving forward are conducted with both partners together. Working side-by-side with your therapist, you will practice real-time communication tools, resolve root causes of conflict, and replace destructive patterns with healthy habits.

Phase 3: The Maintenance Phase

Quarterly Check-ins (Every 3–6 Months)

Once core goals are achieved, periodic maintenance check-ins help reinforce your progress, address new life stressors before they escalate, and protect your long-term relationship health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during my first adult therapy session?

Your initial appointment is an intake session, which is a low-pressure conversation to get to know you. Your psychologist will review your background, discuss what brought you to therapy, and ask about your goals. You won’t be forced to dive into uncomfortable topics before you’re ready—we move at a pace that feels safe for you.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

Our evidence-based treatment is goal-focused instead of being based on attending a specific number of sessions. Some clients achieve their primary goals in 8 to 12 sessions, while others require longer-term support. You and your therapist will regularly review progress to determine what’s right for you.

What if I start therapy and feel like my therapist isn’t the right fit?

Your therapeutic relationship is everything. If you feel your assigned psychologist isn’t the perfect fit, simply let our client care coordinator know. Because we have a large multi-disciplinary team across our Plymouth and Brighton locations, we can seamlessly transfer you to another clinician within our practice without missing a beat.

Do you accept insurance?

McCaskill Family Services is a private-pay / out-of-network practice. We provide itemized receipts (superbills) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA cards. Visit our Billing & Insurance page to learn more.
