Background
Emily obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Eckerd College and her Master’s Degree from Wayne State University’s Counseling Psychology program. She completed her Master’s Internship at Wayne State University’s Counseling and Psychological Services, where she provided confidential individual and group therapy to college students of diverse ages, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and presenting difficulties. Emily has over 11 years of experience working directly with children and parents, having worked as a preschool teacher before transitioning into the psychological realm.
Emily specializes in treatment for behavioral difficulties, emotional dysregulation, acute and chronic anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, perfectionism, identity formation, grief and loss, and adjustment difficulties. She uses a wide array of evidence-based treatment approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-based interventions.
Emily is directly supervised by Dr. Nicole Wozniak.
Meet Emily Brzak
Emily Brzak is a therapist at McCaskill Family Services. She works with people across the entire lifespan, but particularly enjoys working with teens and young children. Before becoming a therapist, while in graduate school, she was a preschool teacher, which explains her enjoyment in working with the “10 and under crowd”.
Her clinical work often involves behavioral management, anxiety, and some ADHD diagnoses. A core part of her philosophy when working with kids and families is to be a “safe person” for them. She emphasizes that she is not there to judge or lecture them, no matter what has happened, but to “support them [and] to teach them alternative behaviors”.
On a personal note, Brzak has two young boys, and another child is currently “on the way”. She describes her children as “very rambunctious, very high energy, and sensitive as well”. She is happy to share the experience she has gained from learning “firsthand as you go” through motherhood.
