Psychological Testing | McCaskill Family Services | Metro Detroit Area - learn-disability

It can be very frustrating and overwhelming when everything that you have tried to do has failed or has had limited success.

Perhaps it is something hidden behind the scenes that are causing you or your child to continuously struggle with school, work, behavior, or relationships. The brain is a very complicated system with many processes (memory, attention, verbal and nonverbal language systems, etc.). A weakness or breakdown in one of these processes can cause difficulties. It is easy for all of us to see a broken leg, making it difficult for a person to walk. However, we can't "see" what is happening in the brain that may be contributing to struggles. Instead, we may use terms like "lazy" or "unmotivated" without understanding the full picture. Neuropsychological/educational testing will help us to determine if there is an underlying, "hidden" processing weakness that may be contributing to your or your child's struggle with school, work, behavior, and/or relationships. Once we can identify exactly what is going on through this comprehensive evaluation process, our expert fully-licensed clinical psychologists provide an individualized "roadmap" of practical solutions to help you, your child or your teen reach their highest potential. If you follow the roadmap we design using the data from the evaluation, grades improve, self-esteem and self-confidence improve, motivation toward school, learning and/or work improves, and relationships improve.

The MFS Evaluation Process.

Step 1: Initial Clinical Interview (1 Hour)
Psychological Testing | McCaskill Family Services | Metro Detroit Area - OUR_EVALUATION_PROCESS
Parents or adult clients attend a one-hour clinical interview with one of our psychologist/clinicians during which we gain a thorough understanding of the current concerns, as well as document a detailed developmental, medical and educational history. Then we determine if testing is recommended, and provide you with more information about the tests that will be used.
Step 2: Neuropsychological Testing (4-6 Hours)

Adults participating in an adult assessment are taken to a quiet room with the psychologist/clinician to complete the evaluation, with short breaks throughout the testing. With children, we try to make it as fun and comfortable as possible. Upon arriving at their appointment, children are greeted and given a general overview of the reason (previously agreed upon with the parents) for the evaluation in a "child-friendly" manner. Once the child is comfortable separating from his/her parent, he/she is brought to the testing room to begin the evaluation process. Parents are welcome to stay in the waiting room or may choose to leave during the evaluation. Most of the testing is similar to schoolwork, such as completing puzzles and pencil/paper tasks. Positive reinforcement and continuous 1:1 praise and attention help the child feel comfortable and confident in their performance. Furthermore, the children love earning prizes for working hard and following directions! Almost all children truly enjoy the evaluation process and many ask if they can come back again. Adult testing is similar, with short breaks offered throughout the testing.

Step 3: Parent Feedback (60-90 Minutes)

After approximately one to two weeks following the testing, parents or the adult client meet with the examiner to review and discuss the testing results and recommendations. In this session, a "roadmap" is provided with specifics on how to proceed to ensure optimal academic, employment, social, behavioral, and emotional success.
